电视剧《台上人家》讲述的是一个被长期闲置的舞台，住着京剧团、话剧团、杂技团。群艺馆、画院的五户人家，他们嬉称自己为“台上人家”。“台上人家”中有古稀之年的老画家、有曾经名噪一时的京剧演员、有提前退休的群艺馆长、有下海经商的服装设计、有演员改行的电视导演、有大龄独身的女作家、有魔术师出身的穴头、有在歌厅赶场演出的歌手、有没戏可演的演员、有进城闯世界的小保姆……他们有的为衣食劳碌，有的为事业奔忙，有的为前途困惑。

　　法月弦之丞（山本耕史饰）斩断对千绘（早见朱莉饰）的情思，开始了剑术修行之旅。千绘的父亲甲贺世阿弥（中村嘉葎雄饰）受密令所托，为了寻找倒幕的歃血盟书《鸣门秘贴》而潜入阿波德岛，但从此销声匿迹。数年后，对剑道感到绝望的弦之丞以虚无僧之姿重归江户。完成与女盗回头网（野野澄花饰）、辻斩十夜孙兵卫（袴田吉彦饰）等人命运的邂逅的弦之丞，为了能与千绘再次相见而登门拜访世阿弥家。但此时自称首席弟子的旅川周马（武田真治饰）却声称千绘因抑郁之症，不想见任何人。
