20世纪上半叶，中国社会正处于历史发展的十字路口，政治局势错综复杂，工人运动风起云涌。在北京西南的古镇长辛店，年轻贫寒的机车厂工人康本善梦想“当大工匠，修最难的机器，造最好的火车”。在党组织的引导下，他与王冉秋、王森、吴世驹等进步分子一起团结工人力量成立工人俱乐部、护送罢工捐款、保护技术骨干、反抗日军侵略、抓捕国民党特务等，并在与各派反动势力斗争的过程中逐渐成长、成熟。建国后，他与王冉秋作为二七机车厂的工程师伉俪，为新型机车研制做出重要贡献，成为了真正的“大工匠”。
1945年，漫长苦难的八年抗战终于结束。饱经战火洗礼的老兵张向北（于震宇 饰）和兄弟们返回阔别已久的老家东北辽城，谁知和平安康并未到来，官僚腐败、仗势欺人的情形依然严重，他的父亲更遭人陷害以汉奸的罪名投入监牢。向北依靠有过一面之缘的辽城商会会长金转云（赵本山 饰）的帮助，暂时免于牢狱之灾。然而警察局长杨士亮（李立群 饰）以及警察局探长严洪森（小沈阳 饰）却想尽各种勾当坐实张父的罪名。最终，向北眼睁睁地看着父亲背负莫须有的罪名惨死狱中。怀着复仇之心的向北视杨士亮为眼中钉，可是他又和对方的女儿杨欢（毕畅 饰）互生情愫。在金大佬的暗中支持下，经历了刀光剑影的老兵踏上了一条具有非凡意义的抗争之路……
